What, indeed, do we stand for?

Is the City of Thibodaux to become a small-scale version of the City of New Orleans in which someone thinks they see a case of racism in a historical figure, such as President George Washington, therefore any schools named after them must be renamed?

In the recent letter by Laura Millet, published Oct. 19, 2006, in the Daily Comet, Miss Millet takes exception to the name of E.D. White Catholic High School. Her entire argument is based on one passage of an Internet based encyclopedia article, which even has a footnote informing readers that the passage quoted needs a reference to back up the claim.

Yes, Wikipedia is a great reference tool and most of the information is correct. However, Wikipedia is not fact checked by a team of scholars before any information is posted to the world. And, Wikipedia even warns users to beware of possible vandalism to an article.

“In particular, older articles tend to be more comprehensive and balanced, while newer articles may still contain significant misinformation, unencyclopedic content, or vandalism.”

It just seems odd to me that Miss Millet writes her letter just two weeks after that passage is added to the entry for Chief Justice Edward Douglass White. Continuing with the odd, the entry was added anonymously by someone who just so happens to live in Baton Rouge. A little “Wag the Dog” here?

Searching the Wikipedia records, the passage was added at “19:46, 30 September 2006” by an anonymous user with a current IP address of Do a reverse DNS search of that IP address and you find out that it is used by BellSouth for their DSL customers in Baton Rouge.

Personally, I think Miss Millet has an unknown ax to grind with E.D. White Catholic High, but thanks to the exceptional education they provided to her, she found a way to use the Daily Comet as an unknowing tool for her personal vendetta.
