Comments from the Senator

The other night I was able to attend the Bayou Industrial Group's Annual Membership Banquet. The keynote speaker was U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu.

I'm still trying to get a copy of her speech, but here are some of the notes I jotted down.

• Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Weber has been elected President of the National Sheriff's Association.


• Since 1955, the Federal Government has received over $160 billion in revenue from offshore drill. It is the second largest stream of income for the Federal Government, following personal income taxes.


• Beginning in 2016, Louisiana and other coastal states will begin receiving 37.5% of revenues from off-short oil drilling. The same percentage offered by President Harry Truman when offshore drilling was in its infancy.


• Senator Harry Reid, D-Nv, Democratic Leader, has promised to get the Morganza-to-the-Gulf Levee Protection System passed through the Senate on its own if no progress is made on passing a new Water Resources Act.


• The Lafourche Parish School System has a school nurse in every school.


• Senator Landrieu will chair a new Disaster Recovery Subcommittee of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee which will oversee the recovery provisions of the Robert T. Stafford Act and other elements of the National Response Plan, including the disaster response functions of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
